Workaround to do group within a group

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

in QB pro 09, is there a workaround to be able to group within a group on an invoice? 1 item in the group is books, the other is tuition/fees. In the latter, I want a total to show on the inv., but I want to assign tuition. and fees to separate accounts

Group has nothing to do with how the items are setup & what accounts get posted when you sell.
A group is a way of selling multiple items as 1 on an invoice, instead of entering all the items individually.

Hope this helps. If so please mark solved, if not please ask more questions. Thanks!

That's just the point! I formed a group to include tuition and fees together so that a student would see a total cost instead of a whole list. But I want to post the separate fees and tuition to different accounts. It seems QB is very limited in being able to do this. Has anyone solved this problem?

The expense and Income accounts are "assigned" when the individual Items- Books, Tution/fees. etc.  are set up. Putting them in a group or groups will not change the accounts they are assigned to. Have you tried setting up Items and Groups in the Sample File? I assure you that QB will do exactly what you want.

thanks, Will. I know that. I set up the individual items to their individual accounts. But if I want to have a group with just two line items (books) and (tuition/fees) I have to combine all the tuition and fees as one line item. I want to get around that restriction in QB, so that I each fee and tuition in that line item goes to its separate account, but it shows up on the invoice on one line of the two-line group. My question is if anyone has found a way to get around that restriction in QB.

Your latest comment has confused me- Why do you only want two line items in the Group? What difference does it make when the customer is only going to see the Group Total? Why would each Tution/Fee line item go into a separate account? The whole idea of Items is to put the detail into Items and SubItems rather than separate accounts in the Chart of Accounts.
