If an employee, you calculate the commission, usually by running a sales by rep report or analyzing invoices and calculating the commission, then use a payroll item called commission and add to the paycheck. Paying the commissions is the easy part. Calculating and keeping track of what you paid commissions on is the challenging part.
Hope this helps. Ask another question if have not hit on what you are looking for yet. Thank you d9scooter.

Tracking sales and commissions in QuickBooks is not difficult to setup (depending on your particular flow and reporting requirements).
However, you must have a system that captures all of the important pieces.
If you are running payroll through QuickBooks, you need to be sure to use that platform correctly.
If you are paying on certain items. . .and not on others. . .and, if you only pay commission on receipts. . .etc. . .
___all these contribute to how you will set up your procedures.

Hey Laura,
Couldn't help but notice a milestone you reached with this question.
Your 9,000th question answered. Wow. Really appreciate all the help. Have learned a lot from your answers. Let's see, even if you spend only 2 minutes per answer (I'm sure you spend a lot more than that on average) that would be 300 hours answering questions. At a value of at least $100/hr, you have provided $30,000 of value in here. Amazing when you add it all up.
