Enlarging the display of the website main page

I am trying to design the website but I find that there is a vacant area on either side of the screen which is showing black.  I would like to add additonal content to fill the screen.  How do you make our website use the entire size of the screen?

I realize that different size web sites are at different resolutions.  Is this something I can change?
