Trouble with restoring/updating company file from windows backup for mac

US QuickBooks for Macintosh : 2010

I have a quickbooks windows backup for Mac company file. It restores the file but crashes every time it tries to upgrade the file to version 2010 when it gets to reports, about 70000. I am running 11.0f2275 on an iMac 2.4GHz 1GB 800 Mhz SDRAM OSX 10.5.8.

You say "upgrade the file". Does this mean you are using a supported QB for Windows version from a previous year? QB for Mac 2010 only works with certain 2010 versions. If you are using a prior version you need to go through the process of upgrading to a supported version and then converting or converting to the supported Mac version and upgrading from there. It is my understanding based on posts made in these forums that Customer Service>Data Services can help with this process.

If you are merely stating that it is crashing during the conversion process from a 2010 supported version then we need to know if the file has passed verification prior to being backed up. Run the application utilities on the Windows side and then backup to Mac. I would also trash the existing preferences for QB for Mac 2010 and be sure to be running the most up-to-date release.

If you have ANY memorized reports on the Windows side, delete them all. They could cause a conversion problem. Also, make sure that you've installed the new release for QB 2010 for Mac—that is R4, which just came out today.

Further to what ProMac said, the Help says that "QuickBooks 2010 for Mac can convert files (1-way) from U.S. versions of QuickBooks Simple Start, Pro, Premier, and Premier Accountant Edition 2008, 2009, and 2010 for Windows." Older versions need to be upgraded using a QB 2010 for Windows trial version before being converted to Mac.

I am converting from Windows Pro version 2009.

I deleted all the memorized reports on the Windows side and also installed the release, thanks for this information.  However, the same problem exists.

Basically when the program is updating or upgrading the file, it hangs up on the progress bar at 'Transactions-Targets (93000)'.  And then my entire OS slows to a crawl until the program is nonresponsive.

schlumpy (hard to type with a straight face!), make sure that your QB 2009 for Windows is fully updated. In addition, rebuild the data file—at least two, maybe three times—to clean up any problems it might have.

Please post back to say whether this helped. If we ordinary users aren't able to solve your problem, then at least we can point you to help.

Upgrade your QuickBooks Mac version (QuickBooks->Check Updates) to R4 (which is 2389, 2275 is R3).  There are some improvements there that may help.
