Duplicate customers that can't be deleted

QuickBooks Premier: 2009: Accountant

I have a client that just transitioned from 2005 QB for Mac to 2009 Premier. We had help from QB Data Services transitioning the database. However, I now have duplicate customer list entries that show no history, but can't be deleted. Any advice?

Can you still mark them as inactive?

As it gets closer to tax season, I wish I had some hair to pull out.

Or merge them?

Accountant Man - They can be placed on inactive status, but the duplicate names are causing an error message every time I back up, and are interfering with QuickAdd of new customers (causing the system to crash occassionally).  So inactive status isn't going to solve the issue.

RekaUjj - They can't be merged, because QuickBooks says that they have payments received, and that merging the names would throw off customer balances.  This is in spite of the fact that there are no transactions shown for any date for the duplicate names (using both QuickReport and Customer History).

They probably can't be deleted since there is info in them from the past. You may be stuck.

Can you tell what the error is during backup? There is a function for cleaning the file(or fixing errors) or condensing the files so old data becomes condensed. Try it with a dummy file you set up just for that purpose.
