You can see the balance of the payroll liabilities account as of a certain date--try a different report or check your settings on cash vs. accrual.

I need a report showing the different expense accounts for accounts payable at year end. I can get a listing and sort by expense accounts, but want it totalled by accounts.

That is harded--you may just want to export it to excel to total by account. Or there are companies that have created custom reports that you can buy--search at marketplace.intuit.com.

And another account - need the detail on the payroll liability account. Once it's paid you can't go back to see the balances as of a certain date. Accountants need this information at year end, why doesn't Quickbooks allow for it?
