how do i know what DMS database i am printing to?

Open DMS and look at the very bottom of the screen.

It will always be the last database you opened, regardless of if that copy of DMS is still open.  So to append to Guru's answer, you will need to open a new DMS window, as any currently open may not be in the "active" database.
