Is there a way to password protect a client file so the Administer can not see it? I, a preparer, would like to keep my tax return confidential. Also, I do some family returns that I don't want the administrator to see.

The administrator is allowed access to all files.  Do your return and print it and take it off the computer.  As far as family returns, either ask for permission or don't do them on your employers computer.

The Administrator will have access to all files. What you can do is save the return to a CD after the initial set-up of client information but with out the data input, then save it to the cd each time you make changes. You will have to have the CD inserted to access the file each time. This way if the Administrator gives you permission to utilize the software you can keep the family data private

MJ's solution will work fine, but I'd do it a little differently.  I would (1) leave off the names and other indentifying data until the returns were complete in every other respect; (2) enter the names, etc, and immediately print to pdf; (3) when you're satisfied with the return, delete the ProSeries file; and (4) transfer the pdf files to a CD which you take home.  I would also heed tilt's warning about preparing them on your employer's dime.

Using the CD that I suggested allows you save the file on the CD and then to delete the file from the Hard drive. Then if you need to make changes just insert the CD then go to "File"  after the Tax Program is open from the top right corner and you can go to the CD and All data will be there and nothing on the hard drive and All data is confidential and cannot be accessed

OK, thanks for all the help.

Just to clarify I am the owner and just realized that my main computer guru was the administrator and had access to files that I always thought were password protected. So much for all  my secret information that I didn't what her to know. ( you know how much I lost in the market, etc.)

So, my return in done, finally today.... if I back it up to a thumb drive..... will I be able to restore anything next year so the carryforwards, K-1 info, kids, addresses, bank information will be there??

back it up to the Thumb or Flash Drive save a copy on your home desktop also. Make sure you can access the Thumb or Flash Drive then delete it from the HardDrive that the Administrator operates

MJ & Archie both have good suggestions, but I got to thinking (uh oh, dangerous)... Why aren't you the administrator and how often does your computer guy need to get into your system?  Why not have him change that.  Also, password protect ProSeries and any other specific files you don't want him to have access to.
