Can't get Payment Types into my Daily Sales Summary

I am trying to use the Sales Receipt feature to do Daily Sales Summaries-entering items sold is fine, but can't enter any payment method items to show cc/cash etc. breakouts. I can only choose one payment method. Laura D, help! QB 2007 for Mac.

Create payment type items and put these on your sales receipt after the sales item(s).

Go to Lists>Items>New. . . there is an item type for payment.  .

Does this help?

hey Laura, thanks for speedy response: i had no problem creating the payment type items (they would link/head to checking) BUT the sales receipt form won't let me enter them on the list (i am doing as you said, right after the sales list items). The sales receipt form includes a drop down for "payment method" (that includes cash and cc's, but you can only choose one) and when i try to add the payment type items to my list, i get an error message that essentially says i can only use the sales receipt to record cash sales. Maybe i am using an version of QB that is too old, or i'm not setting up the payment method items correctly?

Don't put a payment type in the first field.

Then, will it work?

Hi Laura: i hope somewhere you get pd big bucks for this kind of help! I am using Quickbooks Pro 2007 on a Mac: i did try a) not selecting anything in the drop down payment methods, and for the heck of it, cash (since that's what it thinks i'm doing) and a cc (it lists all four of course as options) no go. BUT I have saved and restarted QB (this is a Mac person's solution to everything ha!) and i'll give it another try. thanks for walking me thru this. I have nine months of sales to enter and i've got to get it set up correctly...

below's the error message in full -- should i just give up and record daily sales in an invoice template? I am going to "Enter Sales Receipts" from the Customer menu -- is there a preference or option i need to turn on/off?

You cannot use a payment item on a cash sale. If you are not receiving full payment for the sale, use the Create Invoices window instead of the Enter Cash Sales window.

Grrr - must be a Mac thing.

Try this - setup discount type items (or other charge type) and 'point' them to the bank accounts, if possible.

or, if that doesn't work -

Don't add any lines for this - sent the total sales items, including sales tax collected, to a bank type account called Sales Clearing account.

Then, use write check and post the separate amounts as they will hit the bank as separate checks.  That account will zero out after all funds are re-allocated.

I think this will be easier than creating invoices and applying payments.

Post back with your findings and thoughts. . .

If you have 9 months of data to enter, you might want to enter monthly totals and, then, use a daily entry for going forward.

Just to clarify - no one pays me to post on the forum.

I do, however, provide personalized QuickBooks consultaions using remote access and phone/e-mail communication.  (that I get paid for)

thanks Laura, i am going to try out some of these choices tonight after work -- i'll let you know. might be smart to go ahead and upgrade my QB, too. I think the monthly total choice espec. for 2009 might be smart as well -- we need some detailed income data for loan apps and such. it's a good thing i own a bar. this will require a glass of wine (whine too) ... if i view your own site, am i able to see your rates?

First of all, I don't think that upgrading is necessary in your situation.

Secondly, you might want to post a question regarding daily sales summaries and payment type items in the Mac forum.

Also, e-mail me using the address on my profile and we can discuss my services and rates.
