LOCAL TAX PROBLEM

The Local Tax pulldown that I am using for Birmingham, Al is doubling the amount of liability. What could be the problem?

I don't have enough information to direct you to an exact solution. Generally speaking, you should double check the following areas:

  • Access the tax table and review the formula to make sure the percentage is correct.
  • In the Main Employee Update screen, check the Exemptions and Extra Withholdings section for extra amounts entered. This will affect the withholding.
  • If you are looking at an account balance where the tax liability posts:
    1. Carefully review the payroll distribution report to determine which entries need to be reclassified to another GL account.
    2. Access the Manual Processing screen for the affected payroll checks and override the posting account by clicking in the account field and changing it to the correct one.
    3. Also change the GL accounts on the Employee's Earnings Records screen.
    4. Repost the payroll journal if automatic posting is not in use.
