My 11 year old HP-6P LaserJet printer (workhorse) finally needs replacing --- can anyone provide a positive experience with the printer you're using?  Prepare approximately 200 returns.

Thanks.

The Brother MFC-7420 fax/copy/scan/print. Or a slightly more recent version. The best thing is Brother support. If one does go down they send you a new one and you send the old one back in the same box. Also, their software support is available very quickly by phone if anything breaks the scan/printer port software. Its sheet feeder does a great scan to file, it does enlargements and doublesided prints and copies. The only issue I've seen is it will slightly overheat on big faxes and print jobs which causes paper jams. The fix is easy - I set a small fan (personal size) next to the airflow  on either side whenever I'm sending a fax that is over 15 pages or so, or doing a large print job of several thousand pages. The downside is its paper holding - the drawer holds less than a full ream and the outflow is pretty small so it will spit paper. That's OK for a one person printer but if it's for a work group I'd get a larger machine with a bigger paper holder. I'll be sticking with Brother because of the support, and this machine only cost $150 all in. I've had the same HP6 and loved my HP3 that I bought as my very first laser printer in 1993 for $1700. Unfortunately, HP lost my business due to lack of telephone support and seriously downgraded reliability in their consumer products, in more recent years. Brother rules on price/perfomance and support.

I've used HP printers for as long as I can remember and have had good luck with them.  We upgraded computers and printers about 3 to 4 months ago and went with the HP 3005d.  We have been very satisfied with them so far.

I have been using HP Laserjets for over 20 years very successfully. 2 years ago we purchased 2 HP P3005d printers (same as IRMN) and have been extremely pleased.

All we have is HP's.  HP4, HP5, HP4200 and HP2100.  Never had any problems with any of them and except 2100 they are all faster than we can assemble returns.  Plus the 4 & 5 use same cartridge so one less extra new cartridge laying around.  I once dusted them off but never had to use a fan yet.

Once more, I have a different approach.  Currently, I'm using a Brother HL-2140 for which I paid less than $100.  It's tiny, fast, and flimsy.  But I have two more, still in the boxes, in my closet.  They cost less than a toner refill for many printers, and they produce a nice-looking product.  I consider them consumable supplies, although my present one has made it through 1-1/2 tax seasons.  I prepare about 350 returns, plus a fair amount of write-up.

Charlie or IRMN, I would be interested in how much faster P3005d is than 4200 series.  Or is there another advantage to upgrading to your model?

taxiowa - we upgraded from the 4200.  The speeds are pretty comparable.  We just operate on a periodic cycle to update systems and this was the year to upgrade.

I have an Okidata B6500 that I bought a few years ago that I really like.  I had a different Okidata before that and used it for 18 years with no problems.

Thanks IRMN, I thought maybe it had better quality results or more efficient toner life.  Cause I like the 4200.  The next page keeps saying get out of the way, I'm coming.  I guess we operate on the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it cycle."

The 4200 really is a good durable work horse.

I upgrade every 3 or 4 years. My HP P3005d printers replaced HP 4s. They are faster than the 4s and the duplexing works very well.
