You cannot just convert from QuickBooks Enterprise to QB Pro or Premier.  However, there are 3rd party apps that will convert the file for you.  Check out www.q2q.us or www.bigredconsulting.com

If you're a member of the ProAdvisor Program, you get QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions for Accountants so we can support these clients.

You can convert a QB Pro file to Enterprise, but I don't believe it works the other way.  The Pro file doesn't recognize the file extension

Thanks so much for your help Michelle.  We have reviewed the program on www.q2q.us and it looks like this will work for us.  Do you have any experience with this program?  Do you know if we can use it to convert from Enterprise to Pro doing it the remote way?  Do we need to buy 2 licenses?  Thanks again.

Doing it remotely?  If it were me, I'd have the client send me the file and do it here.  They can send a large file via www.sendthisfile.com or www.yousendit.com   (both have a free service to use).

What I meant by remotely is via email.  Sorry, poor choice of words.

There is a feature where you create the transfer file on one computer and email it to the other computer to import.  Will this work if you are converting from Enterprise to Premier?  I am assuming that doing it this way you would have to have their program on both computers.  Does this mean that I would need to buy two licenses for the program?  The reason I ask is that their computer has Enterprise on it, but not Premier, and of course, our computer has Premier, but not Enterprise.

Thanks again for your help.

What are you trying to accomplish?  If you need to support the client, log in remotely and you will be using their QBES file and there is no problem.

No, you can take an accountant's copy between QBES and QB Premier.

If you convert the QBES file to QB Premier, then the client cannot continue working in the file while you're working on it.  Unless, you use a 3rd party app to import transactions.

Easiest method--remote access!

The client wants us to take over maintaining their Quickbooks file, entering all transactions for them.  Therefore, they will not need to work in the file once we have it.  So remote access is not what we need.  We just need to convert the file so that we can begin using it in Premier.

So, have the client create a back up file and send it to you.  Use the tool from www.q2q.us to convert it to Premier.

That does not work because in order to use the conversion program you have to open the source file.  We cannot open the file because it is in Enterprise.  Or am I missing something?  We have a portable file from the client.  I downloaded the trial version of the conversion program and it does not work.  It wants me to open the source file.

Ok, then install the conversion tool on their computer to convert the file to Premier and then email that file to yourself.  If you want to do it remotely, have them install Logmein (free version) so you can have access to the entire desktop.

OR, send the file to someone else to convert it for you.
