Trying to move QuickBooks Pro 4.0 for Mac to QuickBooks Pro 2009 for Windows

QuickBooks for Macintosh

In all the help screens, it talks about QuickBooks Pro 5.0 and newer. I am trying to move QuickBooks Pro 4.0 and in trying to save the backup, there is no option to back up to Windows. I have tried saving the file to the flash drive and also saving the file to the desktop and then moving it to the flash drive. So far, nothing has worked. I fear the the 4.0 version is too old to be to read by QuickBooks Pro 2009.

Please advise!

You first need to update QBP 4.0 for Mac to QBP 2009 for Mac. As long as that file is QBP 4.0 M12a (the release put out for the year 2000), QBP 2009 for Mac should be able to open and convert the file. However, it must be M12a.

After you convert to QB 2009 for Mac (use a trial version to do that), you can output a backup for Windows.

Thank you for your reply and suggestion.

We tried to update Mac QB 4.0 to Mac QB 5.0 and were able to download the update, however the Mac has OS 9.0 and it needs a minimum of OS 9.2 to install the update. I guess we now need to look for an update for OS 9.0 to get to the next step.

We appreciate your help.

Why are you updating to QB 5.0 for Mac?

Because it looks like the 5.0 version can format the backup data into something that can be read by my PC. The 4.0 version does not have that "option" when backing up the data.

Today we tried to update the Mac to OS 9.1 but the computer just froze up when attempting the download. This has been so frustrating.

Please re-read my 6/23/09 12:09 PM answer above. QB 2009 for Windows is not supposed to be able to open anything but a backup made from QB 2009 for Mac. See this screenshot:

That table is from a ProAdvisor KB article: http://bit.ly/RZM01. As the table indicates, a QB 5.0 for Mac data file cannot be opened by anything newer than QB 2005 for Windows.
