The DMS bulit in backup function works less than half the time.
I copy paste using windows explorer to various flash drives that I rotate out of the office. Also copy paste a second comptuter on my network. Also use the paid version of "Mozy" an online backup service to backup the database daily.

I backup using carbonite on-line backup constantly and daily using USB portable hard drives. I don't use the backup feature in DMS. I have restored the DMS database files to my laptop with no troubles.

Ah, the backup nightmare. With our current DMS data directory being around 150GB and maintaining all our files in DMS (very little paper files) it is imperative we be able to restore. Despite having shadow copy on the server, it isn't a very functional way to recover any files since files names and directories under the DMS folder are renamed by DMS to be numerical. We not only maintain server backups to external hard drives, but also run multiple backups of data (including DMS folders) using a program SyncBackSe to a NAS box as well as VPN to another offsite computer as well as running the DMS backup function. With paperless files and essentially no way to go back if you loose your electronic files, I don't believe you can have too many backups of the DMS data. We keep permanent copies of the DMS folders at selected intervals generally twice a year just for catastrophic loss purposes.
