Proforma them both.  Ask them who gets (stuck with being) first on the joint return.  Create an Excel worksheet listing all the carryovers, with a column for each spouse and a column for the total.  Go into the first spouse's file, and tag everything T.  Add the second spouse's carryovers (tagged S) to the first spouse's.  Flip to the General Information sheet in Forms.  Verify that the totals match your check page.  Do whatever you'd normally do for a lost client for the second spouse's proforma'd file.

I personally don't mess with trying to get the prior-year summary to reflect an "as-if" combined filing.

Hey, we get sig files now! Cool - I wonder what I'll put here? Ah, I know: RTFM.
