gift certificate
I need gift certificates to show up in my banking / deposits because we deposit the amount at time of purchase, not at time of redemption. How do I do this??

Set up two items -
1) Gift Certificate Purchased - Other Charge. Point it to a current liability account called Gift Certificates Outstanding.
2) Paid by Gift Certificate - Discount type. Point it to the same current liability account called Gift Certificates Outstanding.
In your sales receipt, daily sales summary, or invoice (depending on your flow), use the appropriate item to increase or decrease the Gift Certificates account and the Cash (checking) account.
