I cannot print portrait style invoices

QuickBooks for Macintosh: 2009

I cannot change the page orientation of an invoice to portrait. It's as though the option isn't even available. I've already tried changing it in File-Print Setup-Invoice as well as within the invoice print set-up itself. Please help!

Hi,
What kind of printer are you using??

Hi Ron,

It's not so much even the printer (Epson 500 and/or PDF 8.0) as the fact that I can't even get it to display the portrait option when going to my print settings or settings in general. Therefore, the PDF invoices I send to customers appear in landscape and they are missing the bottom portion.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi,
Can you print all other programs OK, or is this system wide. or just with QB.
Try this
trash the QB preference located in the Preferences folder that's inside your user/Home Library folder.
and than when you start QB again it make a new set.

Hi,

It is only a QB issue, not system-wide. The only two files I can see associated with QB in my user/preferences library are:

- com.intuit.JHandShake.plist
- com.intuit.LayoutDesigner.plist

Do you suggest deleting those?

Thanks
Heidi

The preference you should dump is located in your user/Home Library folder in its Preferences folder. (I believe you should stay away from the one that might be in your Mac's root-level Library folder.)

com.intuit.QuickBooks2009.plist

This is on Leopard, right?

The 10.5.6 update may help; Apple changed some things in printing. Don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try.

hdanos, there is a Print setup inside the Layout Designer also that over-rides what Invoice print settings you may have in QB.

With your Create Invoice window open, click on the Customize button next to the template dropdown. When the Layout Designer opens, go to File>Page Setup and see whether landscape or portrait is set there.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, nothing has yet fixed the problem. I've attempted deleting files from the preferences library, and all file-print settings have been changed (main QB settings as well as within the customize invoice area and printer settings).

Also did the Leopard 10.5.6 update to no avail. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Another thought... I pulled my company file from a 2007 Windows version of QB. Could there be something within the company file that is causing this in the new Mac 2009 program?

hdanos, perhaps you need to download an updated printer driver for your Epson. Epson printers do seem to be named in most of the complaints on this forum, but I have yet to see any one answer that solves all of their problems.

On the off chance that this is some kind of Mac-user account corruption, you could create a new one and open QuickBooks from there. However, if your Mac is pretty new, then I wouldn't expect this to be the problem.

You could also try running Disk Utility to repair permissions - again, an off-chance kind of thing.

(I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think it's a blast to help someone who is both cheerful and grateful!) (That would be you, hdanos)

So now I'm wondering if there is a default/preferred orientation in your Print/Fax System Prefs.
I'd expect that to be over-ridden by *any* software, but it makes me wonder if it isn't somehow stuck. Can you change the print page orientation in, say, Word?

P.S. Good detail about converting from QB Win, but that *shouldn't* impact printing prefs. Better I should say "it hasn't previously been reported as an issue".

I truly appreciate all the suggestions! The driver doesn't seem to be a problem as it's doing this when trying to print and when trying to email as a PDF (version 8.0).

I've contacted QB directly for assistance and I'm surprised that they don't offer support for these types of issues without purchasing a support agreement. They did offer to do one month of free support, but only if I provided them with credit card info to which they would bill add'l months. This could be stopped at any time, of course, but it's the principle of the matter that irks me. I'm hoping I can resolve this without having to deal with them directly.

Thanks again for all the great assistance and any additional thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!!

Another interesting thing... for invoices that I brought in from my PC version, the invoice template field displays these characters (-

When print previewing or emailing those invoices (ones for which I did not create in the Mac version) the portrait setting is available and they preview/print fine.

When creating a new invoice, the (- characters do not show up and I am forced to choose another template or create one (I've tried both).

Heidi, be sure to pay special attention to anything jfisher says. She really knows what she's talking about.

If you don't hear more by Friday, come back here and "bump" your discussion. Macworld will be taking some of the Intuit folks away for a few days.

Having the same issue here. Was working fine the last time I used QB. I suspect this issue is caused by the last OS X point release. I can't be sure of course but nothing else seems to make sense in this case.

@hdano, please report back if you find a fix / work around and I'll do the same.

Ah! I didn't have it installed prior to my last OS X update, so unfortunately, I can't confirm whether or not that might have something to do with it, but I will definately keep you posted!

Has anyone come up with a solution to this yet? I'm going to have to bill near the end of the month and I'm afraid that my clients will end up with 1/2 of an invoice in landscape style! Yikes.

Grasping at straws here.

Have you gone to Epson's Web site to see if your printer driver is up to date? Here's the link for Epson's Macintosh Leopard Support:

I'm actually using a different printer, HP Photosmart C3100, and have the same issue. I can't imagine it's a printer issue. How about this, here are screenshots I took of the print window in Quickbooks vs. Safari:

Quickbooks:

Safari:

On the Quickbooks print window, notice there's not an option to select page orientation. If possible, could someone with a working installation please compare this image to your print window and see if there's something different? It would be much appreciated.

Has anyone looked into filing a bug report with Intuit?

Todd
