I may need a wireless card for my new HP's rp3000 Point of Sale System. How much will that run me? Will it negate my warrantee if I install that myself? ANd will it cause any security issues for my customers if I were to use it that way?
I don't think that is would void your computers warrantee as almost everyone adds a wireless card to their computer now a days... 2. It will run you anywhere between 20 to 150 bucks depending on speed and maker for one.. You also must have a buy a wireless router if you don't have one aready and that will set you back anywhere from 50 to 200 bucks again depending on the speed you want.. Most wireless router work on G or N speed with N being the fasted speed of the two... You can install it yourself.. Just make sure you read the set up insturctions first as not doing it in the order they tell you will casue major problems for you... As far as Security issues just make sure you setup really good long password with caps, numbers and make it randon... I personaly have my entire office setup on wireless including all the printers and theCopy/printing/ fax machine setup... My printer only had the power cord plugged in and it works great... and the speed is great as it prints out doc's as it was plugged right into my computer directly. The best part is that I can be working outdoors on my patio with my laptop and print doc's without having to tied to the printer by a cord... Hope this help you ...
I will just add (regarding the security aspects) and to reemphasize setting up your encryption with your wireless products. This is key. otherwise people could intercept the data as it travels the from your Point of sale device to the computer.
Typically, however, the wireless aspect of any POS device is between the bar code Scanner and your terminal not between your terminal and your card reader. The information that travels through from the bar code scanner to the terminal is negligible and has little need to be protected. Most important it to make sure your Credit Card information is secure. So if your card reader is still attached with a wire then the important info will be safe. That would be good to look at while looking into wireless options.
I think wireless scanners are great but I like my credit card info to remain wired and secure.
