That sounds like a great idea. You need to contact cruise ships, Casinos, Hotels and Golf Course and try to get package rates for each place. I worked at a resort hotel in Myrtle Beach SC and travel agents toured it and always were with the sales department. I did not work in that department so I can not provide detail info but I do know they received a % of what was booked. Contact the sales department and you will gain an insight to see if it a business adventure you would like to pursue.

FYI- I know a few travel agy owners and they have indicated that the commission received on flights has been reduced dramatically, from like 15% or so just a few years ago to like 2-5% now. I would discourage you from going through these home-based types because there is not real money to be made. FYI_One of my contacts does auto/home insurance out of the same travel agency and totally shying away from the travel stuff, so insurance is the real-one to consider, even if you have to pay a franchise fee to an existing broker 10-15k.

Hi I am a Travel Agent for over 13 years now and here are a couple good organizations to look at that can help point you in the right direction.

They are OSSN (www.ossn.com) and Nacta (www.Nacta.com) both of these are for Home Based which you would probably want to do as to get an ARC number which agencies need to sell air with the airlines it takes a big bond and some hoops to get. If you do what we call a home based agency you still can book cruises, vacation packages and some consolidated air through the wholesalers.

Yes it is true you make no money selling air and honestly who would want to as it is always changing the airlines make their own rules etc etc...

Your best bet is to do packages and specialize in selling unique travel opportunities that no other person really has done yet.

Need more help please let me know...

Good Luck!

Hi Dave,

I owned my own travel agency for 8 years. It was a wholesale agency specializing in dive and adventure travel. Due to the internet and airlines lowering commission percentages, it is not as profitable to own an agency as is used to be. I have heard that people are starting to use agents again. We'll see. The best thing to do is to find a niche that you know about - golf, dive, spa, etc and focus on that instead of trying to sell everything to everybody. A wholesale agency definitely has a higher profit margin than a retail agency. I would also recommend joining a consortium that offers ticketing abilities, consolidated air and other services so that you don't have to invest in that very expensive aspect of owning an agency.

I work with Travel Planners International, they offer lots of help with good information, training, mailings, all kinds of support.

Good Luck,

Let me know if I can help.

I am interested too in starting my own agency and have read so much about it. I have done tons and tons of research. I ordered the book "How to Succeed as a Home Based Travel Agent", and have been reading through forum after forum.

I have read that the best course of action is linking yourself up with a "host agency", there are several that are supposedly great. Here's my question though, how do you do the accounting for it? My brother is an accountant so I could probably get him to do my taxes and things for me, but didn't know if I would need Quickbooks for records or how others were doing it.

I am a stay at home mom that is looking to make just enough to cover student loan payments or a car payment. My mom was working with an agent out of the Bay area and she was telling my mom that she too did it as a side job just to earn a little bit extra income. I have read on some sites that the travel benefits are decent and on others that they are not great. Just wondering what others think.

For the "Newbies" out there: How hard was it to get things up and running, and how much did you have to drop in the beginning?

Hi,

I actually own a home-based agency called Off to Neverland Travel (http://www.offtoneverland.com/.... We specialize in Disney Travel and are always looking for more Disney fanatics to join us in making travel dreams come true.

I second the opinions above that you should always have a specialty in order to position yourself as different from the competition.

So many to choose from...to make sure you get the best take the time to learn about the compensation plans.....don't just listen to what everyone says.

I will help you if you need it to actually break them down and explain each one for you. And to make it fair I will invite any of the company reps to join in on the call to question my breakdown.

I've spent the last year dedicated to this and truly there is no company that can compete with what TraVerus has to offer.

I'm in the process of starting my own homebase travel agency. I would suggest joining OSSN and attending one of their Expo you will gain a lot of knowledge. Also subscribe to Agent at Home magazine. Lastly check out the travel institute online courses. http://www.thetravelinstitute.com/welcome.cfmtn=welc...
