Invoice description should not show 0.00 price

US QuickBooks Premier : 2009: Manufacturing and Wholesale

I would like to start the invoice with a line that gives an overall description, but when I put info in the description column it adds 0.00 to the amount column - which my customer doesn't like. How do I insert a line without price or amt?

Generally if you put NOTHING in the item, rate, quantity and amount columns, use ONLY the description column, it should work the way you want. As soon as you put a value in any of those columns QB will calculate an amount.

I understand "generally" but this isn't one of those situations.  I write a sales order and the description line stays blank for price, etc.  I convert it to an invoice and the 0.00 is inserted.  Every time.  Tried deleting and inserting the line - no change.

Interesting. I do that all the time, without a problem. Have a description-only line in the middle of a sales order, convert it to an invoice, and still have that description-only line in the middle of the invoice.

Can you open one of the "sample" company files, and see if it still occurs there?

Have you updated your QuickBooks installation to the latest release?

If this helped, please give a "thumbs up" or mark it Solved.

I tried the procedure with the sample company file and it works.   What could I have done to mess it up?

I'm using QB 2009: Premier Man and Wholesale Edition

Hard for me to say without having hands on the file. It most likely isn't a problem with the program installation since it works in the sample file.

Make a backup copy of your file. Then run the "rebuild data" option under File/Utilities. Then see if the problem persists. This is a long shot, but worth trying at this point.

I tried the utilities, but that didn't help.  In fact, someone just noticed that this happens on come customers but not all.  Truly strange!

I just tried deleting the line and adding a new one for the description and it works as I want.  So the difficulty is in the creation of the invoice from the sales order.   Any insight?
