lost prior year files, how to start the 2008 tax files? Ok. we lost our 2007 tax files. Lost means lost, gone, or erased. All of them!

So there is nothing to carry over automatically to the 2008 filing.

How do you deal with this problem? All we have are hard copies of the tax files, which unfortunately do not contain 2007 assets started (rental property, etc.); calculated amount of stimulus rebate; tax refunds in 2007, and many such things.

How do you deal with such problems in preparing 2008 taxes?

You mean you didn't back them up to disk or create pdf preparer files? Wow. Your hardcopy file doesn't have the information the client gave you to prepare the return? What is in the hardcopy file? Not even the filed copy of the tax return?

At a absolute minimum you should have your hard copy files, also you should make a backup of the data files each year on a separate file and computer
