Open the older file in the 2008 edition. It will prompt you to make a backup, ask if you really wanna convert/upgrade, then it will ask if you really REALLY want to, then it will do so. Allow extra time if you are converting across more than one "year" of difference or if you have a large data file. Do this on a local computer, not over the network.

I just had the same problem start suddenly. I am trying to open the company file on the installed machine. I can't even get the local installation of QB to open a sample company file.

Nothing changed in my setup-I am running QB Pro Retail 2008 in multi-user mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try starting the QuickBooks Database service in Computer Management->Services. If it starts and stops, it may be have an invalid log path.
There appears to be a problem with the QB 2008 installer whereby it creates the QB database manager service with a parameter containing an unquoted pathname with embedded spaces (ie C:Documents and Settings\%username%Local Settings empQBDBMgr.log). If you open Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesQuickBooksDB18Parameters
and open up the Parameters item, it may look like this:
-n QB_LADC_18 -qs -gd ALL -gk all -gp 4096 -gu all -ch 64M -c 32M -x tcpip(BroadcastListener=NO;port=10180) -ti 0 -ec simple -ct- -qi -qw -tl 120 -oe C:Documents and SettingsfrankdLocal SettingsApplication DataIntuitQuickBooksLogsDBStartup.log

Notice the missing quotes around the log path. Add the quotes to the beginning and end, click OK and exit out of REGEDIT. You'll need to reboot after that. When the machine comes back up, the QB DB manager should be running.

I am running pro2008 on vista in single user mode. But the main company files do travel to run on a win xp 64 machine. Vista service pack 1 was just installed and quickbooks just installed downloaded updates when I opened it. The program will NOT open any company file, not even the sample ones. Both of the upgrades were done since the last time quickbooks was run on this computer. It just says it can't contact the server even when quickbooks is started by doubleclicking on a company file. I checked to registry and the item mentioned by someone as a possible error doesn't even exist on this machine.

Vista users: I had a similar problem with a proprietary software. The solution I have will only work if you are using a local install.

Open the Public/Documents and find the Intuit folder. Copy it and paste it to your User/Documents. Then open QB and it should now be willing to open your company file.

If you need to share files with other users, make sure the Intuit folder is set to be shared with those users.

this one was really really annoying. I'm not a QB person, so this may not work for everyone, but try this: rename dbstartup.log to dbstart.old and restart QB. The file on my system was in C:\Documents and Settings\marian\Local Settings\Application Data\intuit\Quickbooks\log

I didn't think this would work since I had tried so many fixes, BUT it actually did!

Thanks for your help jkallen. It was weird because any user with the dbstartup.log file in their profile on the terminal server had this problem. As soon as I renamed the file they were able to open up company filess
