Why do I need a validation code?

I just purchased Quickbooks Pro 2008, why do I need a validation code when registering? I called the number that was provided and got a validation code, but it says I have an error. I closed the program and opened it again and registered and it did not ask for my validation code.

Now it says, I am registered. I'm confused.

OK. What you actually have here is 2 questions.

1) Why do you need a validation code?

A: Because there are ppl out there who are unscrupulous, copy software, then use hacks or cracks to obtain the registration codes that are hidden within the program. A validation code is a way a software publisher can affirm that the person using the software actually paid for it.

2) Why don't I need a validation code?

A: When you entered the validation code you got on the phone, it is likely you found one of the few bugs in QB2009, and fortunately for you, that appears to have been AFTER the software confirmed your registration. Most likely it hung up when you were trying to do an automatic update - possibly due to a buffer over-run. (This last is purely conjecture.) However it may have happened, it appears you were able to complete the software validation before you hung up, so ENJOY!

Hope this helps in some small way.
