Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks Self-Employed

Learn how to get your trips from Google Timeline.

Keep all of your business mileage in one place. If you use Google Timeline to track your miles, import your trips into QuickBooks Self-Employed. This lets QuickBooks calculate all of your business miles together to maximize your deductions.

Here's how to get a link to your Google Timeline file and import it into QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Step 1: Export trips from Google

You'll start the process from QuickBooks Self-Employed:

  1. Sign in to the Google account you want to export miles from. Keep this open in a separate browser tab.
  2. Sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  3. Go to the Miles menu.
  4. Select the Add trip ▼ dropdown and then Import Google trips.
  5. Select the Google Takeout link.

This opens up the Google Takeout page in a new web browser tab. Tip: Hover over your Google profile icon to make sure you're signed in to the correct account.

  1. In Google Takeout in the Select data to include section, select the Location history checkbox.
  2. Select the Multiple formats button and then JSON from the Location history dropdown. Then select OK.
  3. Select Next step.
  4. In the Delivery method ▼ dropdown, select Add to drive.
  5. In the File type & size section, select .zip for the type and 2 GB for the size.
  6. Select Create Export.

Google may take a few seconds to create the file. When it's done:

  1. Select the Open in Drive link.
  2. Select the verticle ellipses and then Share.
  3. Select Copy link.

You now have the link to your Google Timeline file.

Step 2: Import trips into QuickBooks Self-Employed

  1. Go back to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  2. Go to the Miles menu.
  3. Select the Add trip ▼ dropdown and then Import Google trips.
  4. In the section titled Import your work trips, paste the Google Timeline file link into the Google Drive URL field.
  5. Select Import.

Step 3: Categorize your trips

Your Google Timeline trips are now in QuickBooks.

  1. Go to the Miles menu.
  2. Review the imported trips
  3. Categorize each as Business or Personal.
