Promoting our business through free community work

Launching my business

We started our business as a volunteer project, to help small businesses restrategize their marketing efforts to cope with the recession. We worked for free, which gave us a great way to explore our new location: Dallas, TX.

In order to achieve our project goals, we developed software to help businesses create automated sales channels at low cost. For this we greatly modified our website software, which later became the main product that our company provides.

Once out of beta, and well established in Dallas, we offered 200 hours of work for free to a charity and a non-profit organization. This further helped us to spread the word of mouth about our company.

We recently opened for business and are enjoying the word-of-mouth promotion that our activities have created.

Advice for others

Pick a goal, and then plan how you will reach that goal. Without a plan, a goal is just a wish, without a goal, a business is a ship without direction.

Make sure you benchmark your goals, so you know what overal strategies or tactics are getting you there (or not). Success or lack there off will help you to focus your activities.

And remember: there is no failure, just lessons learned. If something doesn't work, try something else. If that doesn't work, try yet another thing. The real trick lies in trying until it clicks, and never ever giving up! You don't give up on a baby because it can't walk after two years, you keep with it. Same for your business: you keep trying, keep experimenting and you'll land on your feet.
