Hands on rECOvery Started as a Grassroots Program

Launching my business

Hands on rECOvery, a green eco-friendly, Fair Trade and USA made online and brick and mortar shop, was first started as a grassroots fundraiser for people with mental health challenges and other disAbilities.  I taught others how to craft jewelry, baskets and other items from recycled and repurposed materials.  We discovered that there was such a keen interest in our products that I decided to open a shop where people with various challenges can come to learn how to craft, socialize, gain self esteem and earn needed income.

I take individuals with me on weekends to area craft shows and other events in Northeast PA.  It encourages socialization and helps us get the word out about our shops opening on June 8th!

We have a new website under construction where we will be selling our handmade green eco-friendly jewelry, crafts and gifts as well as Fair Trade and USA Made items.  We will be featuring an Artisan weekly with their handmade item.  All the retail items we purchase for resale all support a cause such as enabling children in Africa to have shoes and go to school.   We also have been accepted as a member of the Craftmen of the Endless Mts. and will be selling other members items.

It has been very satisfying to be able to turn my passion of helping others into a business and to see folks flourish into positive thinking responsible community involved citizens!

Advice for others

Attend small business trainings that may be offered by your local SBDC (small business development center).  I have attended wonderful trainings by both our local SBDC and Metro Action which will enable me to run a successful business.  Network with other business owners and join you local Chamber of Commerce.  These are all awesome resources!

Think outside the box.  What began as a problem, lack of socialization and real income for those with mental health challenges in our small rural community, developed into a solution.  We were tired of waiting for the "system" to help and decided to come up with our own solution!

Never give up your dream or passion!
