What Inspired My Business
My husband started the practice after he took early retirement from Philip Morris. He was bored and wanted something to do. Having been the Controller and former IRS Auditor, why not a Tax firm? I came on board after we met. My background is accounting. A match made in heaven, wouldn't you say? I took the tax practice and expanded it into the Accounting and Bookkeeping half of our business. We love what we do!

Fun Facts About Debbie

Personal Bio
I am an Advanced Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor and LOVE what I do. Ever since I learned to balance my first checkbook, accounting and bookkeeping have been "fun" for me. It's like getting to do Sudoku puzzles all day long and getting paid for it! My career started out in the Public Accounting field. Passed the CPA exam and promptly QUIT! Auditing and Tax were not my cup of tea and I left the accounting profession altogether. Auditing? No fun in that! Taxes? You are only popular on April 15th. For the next ten years I was in sales. I moved in to the Computer field getting my Masters in Computer Information Systems after working in a software development company. You know those computers you see in Police Cars? I helped install, teach and test the program some departments are using! In 2002, I was lucky enough to meet my future husband. Unfortunately, he lived in another town. Good news was he has a successful tax practice! Hey, why not work together? I could build the Bookkeeping and Accounting end! After all, I have always loved doing that! All I needed was an affordable software package I could use to start building my end of this new venture. QuickBooks to the rescue! QuickBooks, an easy to use right-out-of-the-box accounting software package everyone could understand! I had found my niche! QuickBooks could be custom designed for the simplest of businesses to the most complex. It became my job to make it "fit". Not only could I use it, but I could teach and show others! Now I get to spend my days helping businesses realize the importance of their numbers. Keeping track of things becomes challenging and fun. My clients can see why there are where they are and how to get to the next level. All through the help of just keeping track using QuickBooks.

Most Challenging Business Obstacle

Business Challenge
Other Problem, One of my most significant business challenges came from a phone call from a local CPA. An excellent bookkeeper in town was leaving her practice and would I be willing to step in and help out her clients - NOW!? It would involve going on-site weekly and becoming their accounting department. Challenge was - they were ALL using PeachTree 2004. UGH!!! (I do NOT like PeachTree!!) I met with one client in particular, a specialty wine and cheese store. Because they were using PeachTree, the bookkeeper was the only one who knew who how to use their system. They never knew what is basic to most business people - their daily cash position. So, I took a look at what was currently being done. The figures were all correct. They were just not done timely. Entering one day’s sales and the subsequent Credit Card and cash deposits took 45 minutes! Holy Smokes! I'll have to move in!! How could this be streamlined and give them the information they want and need?

Our Solution
Upgrade to QuickBooks! They could do their own daily sales tracking. Not only would they save money in professional fees because I wouldn't have to be there so many hours, they would now know what their sales were, what their most profitable items are, how much to pay their employees every week without constant adjustments, how much is owed in sales tax every month and most importantly, how much cash was in the bank at the end of every day. Memorized Sales Receipts were set up with items "pointing" to all the right accounts in the background. Memorized Reports were set up so the Owners could print out what they needed daily, weekly or monthly by just changing the dates. A Payroll Subscription was purchased so payroll checks would be run correctly every payday. No more Circular E!! A few hours were invested on my part setting all this up and few hours were invested on theirs learning step-by-step what to do daily. They love it! No more wondering what about the financial health of their operation. No more called to the bank for the balance. No more employees coming to them saying, "My paycheck is wrong" and no more guessing is the tax deposit! I now go every other week to help out and just to make sure everything is going smoothly. And their CPA loves it too! Their first full year on QuickBooks - only 5 adjusting entries were made! He can now spend the time with this client going over growth strategies instead of figuring out the payables at year end! You may ask, didn't that hurt your bottom line? In the short run, it did. I could have made a lot of money going in 5-6 hours every week. I am a believer in "If I help you get what you want, I'll get what I want." This business has referred me to many, many of his friends with their own business. The CPA comes to me first when a client has a QuickBooks or set-up challenge. The referrals and the money I earned from those referrals has made me much more than the hours I would have billed them being tied to their business. And most importantly for me, I am not frustrated anymore with the slow pace of their old system and I can see what I difference I made. When I help them "win", I "win". too!! Thanks again, Intuit!
