I was impressed by both the video, with the four steps to product development, and the actual product. The mattress is a wonderful idea, and the modifications were so simple once I saw them, that I wondered why this concept had not been considered before.

Kudos to all involved, and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Jon R Kaufmann

What is remarkable about this film is that the message can be translated to any business model while showing just how it worked for the one product. I am so impressed with the Halo bed, will now send along the info to my friends who have newborns.

MomtoManyMunchkins

As a mother of four, I am grateful for these remarkable people.

Emmy

Having a second cousin who died from SIDs at 3 weeks old, I completely understand the goal of this father. This is a great story and concept! As a mother of one and hopefully more, I would be a customer. I can not count the sleepless nights worried about SIDs with my first child!

Static

Sounds like a great product, and the four-step process can be adapted to just about any situation that needs innovation or improvement.

Sludwig

Thanks for the explanation of your process. It's very interesting and what a terrific invention.

mrnatural

Very useful advice, not only for inventors but everyone facing problems that need to be solved.

bayleyl

I learned something !!!

minny

Your video showed how a real need, a creative idea and a practical approach can work together to design a much needed product. Great video!

goldenone

A product of such vital necessity-how inspiring to invent a device with the ability to save babies lives & prevent the sorrow their deaths by SIDS has caused countless parents! The video and concepts of Steve's directions to his clients was so well done-presenting the steps to develop a design into a finished viable product would be magical, if it wasn't so beautifully practical!

LFry

Love the simple approach on product development and how to stay focused on the 3-4 things that really matter. And of course, I LOVE the babies!

Grantastic

No text or audio for the first 27 seconds and just pictures of babies is testing someone's patience. Nice product shots. Explaining the process like in a regular meeting is an interesting angle. Good b-roll. Good to show the steps. The background noise makes it distracting to follow, though.

Jonyaya

Wow, This is Great!

Great idea, concise focus of Goal, Well cut Video.

Very Impressive!

Jonyaya

Great Video.

A needed invention that will save precious lives.

Well conceived, scripted, cut and presented Video.

CJP

this video provides common sense guidelines for designing. I think it is very useful and inspiring for any entrepreneur just starting out or who is stuck in the process.

GregO73

The true definition of "genius" is the ability to make the complex simple and understandable. As a parent I want your client's baby product. As a venture capitalist your presentation and the efficiency of your process compel interest.

melcris

Wonderful idea--and a very inspiring story.

rmecham

Very interesting. I enjoyed watching the process involved with developing this wonderful product.

CaroDWH

Wonderful and interesting product!

rowayton

Well done - thanks for sharing!

kaholland

this is the most amazing thing I have ever heard of .... thank you for putting this together and much luck and success for bringing this to market.

nursesarah

Very inspiring and quite practical. Thanks for this!

nursesarah

I would love one of these when I become a new parent. As a nursing student we hear of the cases of SIDS each year and although it has decreased it is still a problem. If something like this was to work we could almost eliminate these unecessary deaths. Thanks for this.

imacardsfan

Steve makes it very simple - follow his process to develope the product. The process can be applied to any invention, not just this life saving mattress.

Well done video as well!

I will be sure to pass this along to others!

gary18

Very good and best of luck

ftureisnow

Very humbling story. To be sure, this invention is important and timely. In this time of increasing awareness of the necessities for worldwide sustainable living, the more parents feel less fear for survival of children, the closer we will all be toward sustainable world population growth. I commend Mr. Kunert, and look forward to future significant "Green" engineering contributions.

This video is a helpful guide for people with a great idea, but unsure of the path to seeing their hopes realized. It shows that simple steps still need strong experienced guidance. The clip was both useful and inspiring. Good job.

Finalist story from SKunert:

Halo for Haley; A Life Saving Invention Born Through Simple Problem Solving

When Bill and Cathy Schmid’s daughter, Haley, died in her sleep, they wanted answers. They learned that Haley most likely had suffocated in her own exhalations when her tiny arms created an air pocket near her face. Bill, an engineer, was determined to find a way to prevent that from happening to other babies. He invented a mattress that would gently deliver fresh, filtered air to the baby. But the initial design, while functional, was cumbersome and hard to clean. So Bill came to me.

I’m a mechanical engineer specializing in full product development. I turn clients’ invention ideas into marketable products, using a focused process that has applications to any kind of problem-solving — in business, industry, or life. Here’s how it works:

1. Define the problem, including a goal.

2. Establish the top 3 or 4 issues/requirements.

3. Design with the end in mind.

4. Avoid inefficient tangents.

First, we defined the problem: “When a baby’s arms create an air pocket near its head, C02 can suffocate it as it sleeps.” Our goal, then, was to design a crib mattress that prevented C02 buildup around the baby’s head.

We brainstormed to identify essential requirements:

• Fresh air to baby

o Gentle air flow

o Room temperature

o Allergen free

• Safe for baby

o Fireproof, but no chemical flame retardants

o Minimal sag tolerance

o Meets size requirements

o Sturdy construction

• Parent friendly

o Lightweight

o Easy assembly

o Easy cleaning

Now it was my job to engineer the initial design to fit our requirements. In my experience, this is the place where most inventors get stuck. They focus on one criterion at a time, then go on to the next. But, by meeting one criterion in isolation, they often introduce new problems for meeting the rest.

For example, if we focused only on sturdy construction, we might end up with a 400-pound bed — safe, but not parent friendly. Or, if we focused on easy assembly, we might not meet safety requirements. Part of my job is to keep all the features of the end product in mind at once while I work out the engineering.

Bill sometimes said, “What if…?” and suggested other features. If it helped meet the criteria, we added it to the design. If not, we put the idea aside. Every change would cost more money and time. And each day the bed was not on the market was another day of risk for the babies Bill hoped to save.

What was the invention? The Halo Active-Airflow Crib Mattress (https://www.halosleep.com). Thanks to Bill and a simple process, Halo saves lives every day.

Advice for others:

You don't have to be an inventor to take advantage of this helpful process. Save time, money, and frustration by following these steps to solving a problem or handling a project:

1. Define the problem and your goal.

2. Establish the top requirements.

3. Design a solution with the end in mind.

4. Avoid inefficient tangents by keeping it "as simple as possible, but no simpler.”
