The message that is continuously spread by the fashion industry and fashion magazines is that people of size are not able to look good. Fat people have little choice but to buy into this nonsense in various ways, regardless of whether or not they believe it's true. Stores with tiny plus-size sections do little to rectify this. What fat people need is a store geared towards celebrating their bodies and providing a good shopping experience. Size acceptance starts with Fat Fancy - we need Fat Fancy

i am so overwhelmingly impressed with the fine friends at fat fancy! They need to have a store front! These folks are much more than entrepenuers! I thought the video was very informative, and I am sure inspiring to some. I thought is was a bit "Hairspray" inspired, not really my style. I do agree that clothes for the over weight are UGLY and poorly made.
Keep in mind I am fat, while writing this, no really.
FF is a wonderful place where people who've been largely ignored by mainline stores can find their clothes & accesories with a fun, friendly, helping staff.. but they need more space and a permanent store front! Hence, your grant would be very timely for them in getting their dream going. Thru Fat Fancy, I now know im not old, I'm vintage :) . Thank you very much for your help.

Great business idea, filling a badly needed niche. Torrid (spinoff of Hot Topic) tries, but it ain't vintage and selection is limited.
I hope you consider carrying big and TALL. I've always had a really hard time finding vintage because I'm 5'11, wide-shouldered and size 14.

This is a very important store. As any fat fashionista knows, finding awesome clothes that fit is a huge challenge. When we are not being totally ignored by 99.9% of the fashion industry (I'm talking to you, Anna Wintour), we are relegated to a few racks of expensive, garishly printed outfits in a dingy basement at Bloomingdale's. Fat Fancy fills a void in the world of fat women and men by providing a space for fat folks to rock out in some amazing fashions.

The fashion industry would like to pretend fat people don’t exist. All too often, designers refuse to manufacture clothing in plus sizes. If they do, the clothing is often frumpy and unappealing. Well never fear, baby! Fat Fancy is here!
A person who embodies the Fat Fancy aesthetic knows how to take a garment some might consider “frumpy” and make it unique and stylish. Yes, world, fat people can be fabulously-fashion-forward. Our company is here to prove it and to make shopping and dressing more fun, convenient and affordable!
Fat Fancy is a plus size clothing boutique based out of Portland, Oregon. We feature vintage and modern, men’s and women’s styles in sizes 12 and up, up, up! Our sizes are big, but our prices are low. Our first sale was in December of 2007. I turned my studio apartment into a clothing boutique, and promoted primarily via internet. People traveled as much as 300 miles, just to attend the sale!
From there, the shop was moved to a friend’s basement. We set up a wonderland of fabric and lights to create our own underground clothing boutique. Shortly after this, I met my business partner. We joined forces and hold monthly clothing sales to raise money for a permanent storefront.
Aside from stylish clothing and accessories, Fat Fancy offers a size and body positive environment that to aims makes people feel safe and inspired. Our sales are exciting social events that have a party vibe. We play soul music and offer refreshments. It’s not unusual for dancing to occur in the aisles. One of our goals is to encourage people to feel good about themselves and to love their bodies. For people of size, the experience of shopping for clothes can be painful and traumatic. Relief from the pain of shopping has moved some of our customers to well up with emotion.
Our speakeasy boutique has been featured in nationally circulated Curve and Bust Magazines, several blogs, and local media. Customers come to our monthly sales from far and wide. We are proud to have the support from many amazing community members as well as from underground fat fashion icons, Beth Ditto of the Gossip and Leslie Hall of Leslie and the LYs.
Fat Fancy is a fresh and modern community-based business with potential to expand and reach countless people with our message of body love and positivity.
